Handheld Laser Welding

Process Overview

Handheld laser welding uses a concentrated beam to join suitable sheet-metal seams and assemblies. Bison reviews the material, joint geometry, access and acceptance requirements before agreeing where the process fits your project.

Capabilities

Suitability depends on the material and condition, thickness, joint design and accessible weld path. Closely controlled fit-up is important. Filler use, the working range and any required qualifications are confirmed for the selected material and joint.

Design Considerations

Define the weld path, required penetration, material grades, surface coatings and appearance requirements. Agree the allowable joint gap and mismatch, fixturing and any required leak or mechanical testing.

Cleanliness and consistent positioning matter. Dissimilar materials require compatibility review, and lower heat input alone does not establish retained strength or corrosion performance.

Quality

Inspection should address seam continuity, distortion and penetration using the agreed plan. Surface appearance alone cannot confirm internal soundness. Specify the required testing and acceptance limits for the part’s intended service.
